How to write and read spoiler-free reviews
Nobody wants to learn the finale while reading reviews. There are a few practical ways to avoid spoilers and to write spoiler-free reviews.
Tips for writing spoiler-free reviews
- Talk about how it felt, not the plot: pacing, acting, music, cinematography.
- Do not hint at characters' fates; “I was surprised” beats “this happened”.
- Tie your review to the episode you watched; with season or episode reviews, readers know how far they need to be.
- If something still gives it away, flag the review as a spoiler.
How should spoiler protection really work?
In many places a spoiler warning is just a curtain on the screen; the text still reaches the device. In I Watched This the protection works on the server:
- When you write a review you tick “contains spoilers”.
- The text of that review is never sent from the server to people who have not watched that title; the hiding is a real lock, not a curtain in the app.
- Summaries of episodes you have not watched also stay hidden until you tap (you can turn this off in Settings).
The power of episode-level reviews
When someone who finished a show and someone on episode three share one comment area, nobody is happy. Because you can review every season and episode separately, you can read the conversation up to where you are and move on as you progress.
